Membership
The intramural program serves the members of the Brigham Young University Community. Members of this community include: full-time, part-time, and deferring students; faculty and staff; spouses of students & faculty/staff; and non-students who are active members in a BYU ward.
Eligibility
The following rules address eligibility for participation in the BYU Intramural Program. Any situations that are not specifically covered in these rules, which may be considered an attempt to go against the spirit of the rules may be acted upon by the Intramural Director.
  1. All current degree seeking full-time students are eligible. A full-time status requires 12 credits during fall or winter semester (2 credits for graduate students), and 6 credits during spring or summer term (1 credit for graduate students).
  2. All current faculty, administrative staff, non-student staff employees and their spouses are eligible. Dependents of faculty/staff don't have intramural privileges.
  3. Part-time students, deferred students, non-students, and spouses of students must pay an intramural activity fee for each semester in which they participate. This fee is paid at the HHP College Services Office in 112 Richards Building. The cost is $20.00 per semester during fall/winter and $10.00 for spring and summer terms. A BYU ID or BYU Net ID with valid picture ID is required at time of payment. This fee will enable a participant to compete in any intramural activity during the appropriate semester.
  4. Non-students must be active members of a BYU ward. Their membership records must reside in the BYU ward that they attend. Non-students need to be high school graduates, or at least 18 years old.
  5. Current post baccalaureate (non-degree seeking graduate) and E.L.C. (English Language Center) students must pay the intramural activity fee.
  6. Individuals registered only for independent study courses have a non-student status.
  7. Current participants on any college level club, extramural, or intercollegiate team are ineligible to participate in the similar intramural sport.
    1. Current is until their eligibility expires or until they are cut from the team.
    2. Students "Red Shirting" in intercollegiate sports are considered members of the team.
    3. Those "trying out" or working out with the team are considered to be on the team unless they are cut.
  8. Eligible participants may play for only one team in each activity.
  9. To participate in a team sport, each player must be added to his online team roster. Players need to be added to their online roster by 3 p.m. for weekday games and by 3 p.m. on Friday for Saturday games.
  10. No additions may be made to a team's roster after the team has completed regular season play. Only those participants who have competed in regular season play (a minimum of one game) are eligible for elimination tournament play.
  11. No substitutions will be allowed in individual/doubles activities for those listed on the entry form, unless approved by the program coordinator.
  12. In team activities players may only change teams with permission from the program coordinator.
  13. Each activity may have additional eligibility rules, which will be stated in the information sheet for that activity.
  14. Team captains are responsible for the eligibility of each player on their team.
The intramural office reserves the right to make rulings on instances that may not be specifically covered in these eligibility rules.
Illegal Participation
The following situations are considered illegal participation:
  • An individual who plays without checking-in with the activity supervisor.
  • Non-students who do not belong to a BYU ward.
  • A participant who uses another person’s ID card or who allows another person to use his ID card.
  • Any college level intercollegiate or extramural team member who is participating in a similar intramural activity.
  • Any other violations of the BYU Intramural eligibility rules.
Participants who play without checking in to a game will be issued a minimum one-game suspension. A participant who is found to be in violation of the intramural eligibility policies will be given a minimum one-semester suspension from all intramural activities. Misrepresentation of BYU ward status by a non-student will result in a minimum one-year suspension. Contests played with an illegal participant will be declared a forfeit. If three or more players on one team illegally participate, the entire team will be dropped from further play. A two-year suspension will be issued for a second violation of the intramural eligibility policies.
Registration
A semester schedule of intramural activities will be made available three weeks before each semester begins. This schedule can be obtained by accessing the intramural web site at: http://intramurals.byu.edu. This schedule indicates the dates that entries will be accepted for each activity. Participants are encouraged to register as soon as possible for each activity. Some individual/doubles events and most team sports have limited entries. Once the available team sport schedules have been sold out, all other entries will be placed on a waiting list, and may purchase a schedule if an opening occurs. There will be a $15-$50 non-refundable entry fee for all team sport activities required at the time of registration. Teams must choose an appropriate team name that is consistent to the ideals and principles of Brigham Young University. Selection of an inappropriate team name may result in a forfeiture of the team schedule.
Classification
The intramural program is designed for participants of all skill levels. Each activity has a classification process that is intended to place similarly skilled individuals/teams against each other for tournament competition. Individual/doubles events will have a classification round or questionnaire to determine the participant's ability. Team sports are typically scheduled to play four or five league games where each team's ability will be evaluated. Teams will be given a power ranking between 1 and 5 (5 being the highest) for each game they play. At the end of league play an overall average of each team's rankings will be computed to determine which division they will compete in during tournament play. Most activities will have two to four divisions in tournament play, with "Division I" being the highest division. A list of tentative team rankings with division breakdowns for tournament will be posted during the last few days of regular season and teams will have a couple of days to check their ranking. The team captain may fill out a ranking challenge form to petition to move up or down a division if they feel that their team's ability merits a division change. "Sandbagging" during the classification round(s) in an attempt to play in a lower division for tournament is considered cheating and is a shameful offense against the spirit of competition. Teams may be dropped from tournament if sufficient evidence is found that they "sandbagged" to play in a lower division.
Game Schedules
Game schedules are posted in the glass cases located next to the Intramural Office (145 Richards Building) and on the intramural web page. Elimination tournament games are typically scheduled one week at a time. Tournament brackets are usually posted on Friday's by 4 p.m. Participants are responsible for viewing the posted game times to determine the time, date, and location of all their scheduled games/matches.

Posted game times will not be changed for personal conflicts. Team captains should notify the intramural office in advance to avoid potential scheduling conflicts for their teams. This can be done through the use of a schedule request form, which is available in the Intramural Office. This form must be submitted to the Intramural Secretary by 4 p.m. on Thursday for the following week's schedule.

Online Team Rosters
To participate in a team sport, each player will need to be added to his online team roster. Players must be added to their team roster by 3 p.m. for weekday games and by 3 p.m. on Friday for Saturday games. The online team roster program is located on the intramural web page at: http://intramurals.byu.edu/ A team password, which is printed on each team's schedule, will need to be entered. To add players, enter the team member's BYU ID# or Net ID (Route Y ID), and click "Add Player." To check intramural privileges, for those listed on the team roster, click the "View Regular Season Roster" link. The privilege codes that will be listed include: Good, Fee Needed, Fee Paid, & Suspended. A participant whose privileges indicate "Fee Needed" will need to pay the intramural activity fee before participating. Eligible non-students may create a Net ID from the link on the team roster page. Please be aware that no players will be added to a team roster at the field/court under any circumstances. It is recommended that each team have more than the required number of players on their online roster, well before the 3 p.m. deadline, to avoid potential forfeits.

At the conclusion of regular season play, each team will be responsible to check their tournament roster to determine that all eligible players are listed. This is done by clicking the “View Tournament Roster” link on the team roster page. This link will only show those players who have been recorded as playing in one or more regular season games. Occasionally participants who have played during regular season games are not listed on a team’s tournament roster. For this reason it is essential that each team check their tournament roster. Please notify our office of any roster concerns at least one day before your first tournament game and we will try to resolve the problem in time for your game. Players who are not listed on the tournament roster at game time will not be allowed to play under any circumstances. Players whose privileges are listed as "Fee Needed" on the tournament roster will not be eligible for tournament play until they clear this status with the intramural office - 145 RB.

Check In
To be checked in, players need to be added to their online team roster by 3 p.m. for weekday games and by 3 p.m. on Friday for Saturday games. All players need to check-in with the activity supervisor prior to their scheduled game time. It is recommended that players arrive and check-in at least ten minutes prior to game time. Forfeit time is game time! All participants will need to show a valid (government, school or work issued) picture ID before every game. Participants, whose privileges list "Fee Needed", will need to show their paid receipt for the intramural activity fee before they can be checked-in. If a participants' privileges have been suspended, they will not be allowed to check-in.
Forfeits
Teams are encouraged to arrive 10 minutes before game time. FORFEIT TIME IS GAME TIME! A forfeit is given to teams having less than the minimum number of legal players at game time. Teams receiving their second forfeit will be dropped from regular season play and will not be eligible for tournament play. Entry fees will not be refunded if a team is dropped from play. Each team is allowed one “late game” during regular season and one “late game” during elimination tournament play. If the team captain elects to use his late game then the game time is extended by five additional minutes.
Postponements
Contests may be postponed or canceled due to poor weather, poor field conditions, or power outages. Classification matches for individual and doubles events and elimination tournament games will be rescheduled when necessary. When games are rescheduled all other games for that sport during that week are subject to change. All teams are responsible to re-check the schedule when this happens. The decision to cancel activities due to inclement weather will be made by 4:00 p.m. on weekdays and 8:00 a.m. on Saturdays. Participants may call the rainout hotline at 422-3992 for this decision. Outdoor sports may be played in all types of weather and are only canceled when there is a danger to participants or the possibility of damaging the playing field.
Equipment
The Office of Intramural Activities typically doesn't supply equipment (balls, bats, gloves, racquets, etc.) for activities unless otherwise published in the information sheet. Participants are responsible to provide any needed equipment that is not supplied by the intramural office. Some equipment can be checked out by the participant from the Richards Building issue room or the Smith Fieldhouse issue room.
Uniforms
Any appropriate, modest athletic uniform is permissible. BYU issue is optional. Shirts and shoes must be worn. Sleeveless shirts are not allowed. Any pair of cleats considered dangerous by the supervisor or officials may be disallowed for use at any point during each game. Specific attire for each event is given on the information sheets, which are available on the intramural web page.
Honor Code
Brigham Young University exists to provide a university education in an atmosphere consistent with the ideals and principles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This atmosphere is preserved through commitment to conduct that reflects those ideals and principles. The BYU honor code is stated fully in the general catalogue. The intramural office supports the University Honor Code including the Dress and Grooming Standards. We appreciate your shared responsibility in helping us maintain these standards. Those who fail to comply with the honor code will be asked not to participate until they can comply. The honor code is enforced at the activities by the supervisor(s) assigned to your field/court.
Sportsmanship
“Good sportsmanship is absolutely essential in athletic competition. Good sportsmanship includes thoughtfulness and concern for others; sincere admiration for the skills of teammates, opponents, and officials; self-control; humility in victory; and calmness and composure in defeat. It is fair play, following both the spirit and the letter of the rules. It is the Golden Rule in action on the playing court, on the bench, and in the stands. Promoting good sportsmanship in competitive activities is everyone’s responsibility.” Physical Fitness, Sports, & Recreation Manual. - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1984. p. 17.

Sportsmanship is everyone's responsibility. We hope that everyone will conduct himself in a mature and friendly manner. Team captains are responsible for the conduct of their players and their spectators. Spectators may be asked to leave if necessary. Abusive language and/or “trash talking” toward opponents, teammates and officials are not "part of the game." Participants or teams who make a mockery of the game either through their actions or attire will not be allowed to participate in intramural activities.

A yellow/red card system will be used to monitor unsportsmanlike behavior, rough play and improper conduct. A participant who receives a yellow card will be required to sit out for two minutes of game time. A participant who receives a red card shall be ejected from the game and will need to leave the field/court before play resumes. A team with a carded player will be required to play with one less player until the penalty time has expired (Yellow = 2 minutes & Red = 4 minutes). If a player is carded and refuses to tell his name, the game will be forfeited.

Penalties for rough play are sport specific and will be enforced in addition to unsportsmanlike penalties. The following are examples of yellow/red card offenses that apply to all sports:

Yellow Card
Non-directional profanity
Arguing
Rough Play
Taunting opponents.

Red Card
Directional profanity
Flagrant contact
Fighting
Threatening Behavior
Illegal Participation.

In addition to these offenses, each sport has specific yellow/red card offenses that are stated in the rulebook and are listed in the information sheet for that sport.

Yellow/Red Card Point System:

Individual

  • Yellow card (1 pt each) = a two minute power play + specific sport penalty.
  • 2 yellow cards in one game = the player is ejected from the game.
  • Red card (2 pts each) = ejection from game, four minute power play + specific sport penalty.

If a player receives a red card he will be suspended from all intramural activities until he meets with the program coordinator. After the player has met with the program coordinator a decision regarding the length of suspension will be made. If a player receives three sportsmanship points during a semester in one or more sports, his intramural privileges will be suspended for the remainder of that semester.

Players that receive 6 sportsmanship points are sent a letter indicating that they will be on probation with the Intramural program. If they choose to continue to participate they are made aware that any more sportsmanship problems will result in a two-year suspension of intramural privileges.

Team

If a team receives a total of 6 sportsmanship points during the season they will be dropped from further play. However, during elimination tournament play a team will be dropped if they receive 4 sportsmanship points or a total of 6 for the season — whichever comes first.

Liability
All participants play at their on risk and must acquire their own insurance.
Rules
All contests will be governed by the official interscholastic amateur rules as designated on the activity information sheet. A copy of each rulebook will be available to be checked out from the Intramural Office. The intramural office has additional rules for some events so as to equalize competition and to ensure the safety of all the participants. These are on the information sheet for each activity. The Intramural Office reserves the right to amend or change any rule, and will inform all concerned by posting the changes at all appointed posting areas.
Awards
An intramural award will be made available for the winners of each activity in each tournament division.
Protests
The only protests acceptable are protests of ineligible participants. Protest forms are available in the Intramural Office. A $10.00 fee (payable in 112 RB), must accompany each protest submitted. If the protest is invalid, the Intramural Office will retain the fee. If the protest is upheld the $10.00 will be refunded. If you have specific concerns about rules, officiating, or the supervision of an intramural activity we encourage you to contact our office. We will take your suggestions seriously and attempt to prevent a recurrence of your situation. The intramural Department reserves the right to take action on its own against any team or individual who is ineligible to participate.
